Lakeland Today from Dr. Barnett Sturm, Superintendent of Schools
Today’s Lakeland School District has nine buildings. Five elementary, one middle school, two high schools and an Alternative High School. It is the largest suburban district (6200) students in Westchester County.
The District is currently wiring all its buildings and, by September 2002, will have computers and internet access in all classrooms, libraries and computer laboratories. Increased emphasis has been placed on academic growth, with new Advanced Placement Courses, elementary math clubs and middle school writing and math labs.
Thanks to community support, class sizes at the elementary and middle school have been reduced significantly.
The district is currently undergoing a major building project that has led to a 29-room addition to the middle school, a new science wing at Lakeland High School, interior science and art room renovations at both high schools and extensive roof repair, window replacement and other upgrades throughout the district.
As a result of community support, the district facilities and administrators have worked hard to increase the children’s achievement levels. They have done so with success. Lakeland’s students continue to succeed in raising their individual achievement levels and continue on to success in college and business.
The Lakeland School District is proud to be part of a history that continues to focus on student growth and excellence.

The events of September 11, 2001 in New York were horrifying and numbing. All of us, I am sure, are still in the state of shock. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been touched by these horrific acts.
To paraphrase President Bush, Mayor Guiliani and Governor Pataki, we must move on with our lives and not let these terrorists change the way we live.
We have many wonderful programs and activities coming in the next few months. We hope you will put them on your calendar and attend. We are still seeking additional committee and board members. If you have an interest please attend one of our meetings. They are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month and are usually at the YCCC senior room at 7:30pm. The 100th anniversary of the New Croton Dam is coming up and we are likely to work with the Croton Historical Society on a large event. If you have any ideas or want to work on the project let me know. If you have any questions please call me at 914-962-2071.
