AN ISLAND STEEPED IN HISTORY

A slide show and lecture depicting the history of Bannerman's Island, will be presented by the Yorktown Historical Society at the John C. Hart Library, Main Street Shrub Oak on Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at 8:00 PM.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this small island located in the scenic Hudson River Highlands, was know to early colonists and Dutch sailors. Once an uninhabited place, accessible only by boat, it was considered haunted by some Indian tribes. Fanciful tales, both serious and comic, have been told over the years about this tiny island. Photographer Thom Johnson will narrate the slides featuring stunning historic and contemporary photos of the castle. The island purchase by Frank Bannerman, the castle and the famous military surplus business that built it will also be reviewed. The firms catalogues and showroom in lower Manhattan were renowned for their museum-quality display of Military history. The Taconic Park Commission now owns the Castle with its turrets and towers, shrouded in history and legend. This program is free and open to the public. For information call 245-5153.
